Northeast Region
Isaan
is the northeast region of Thailand. It is located on the
Khorat Plateau, bordered by the Mekong River (the Laos border)
to the north and east, by Cambodia to the southeast and the
Prachinburi mountains south of Nakhon Ratchasima. To the west
it is separated from Northern and Central Thailand by the
Phetchabun mountain range.
The main language of the region is Isaan, which is a Thai
language dialect with strong influence from Laos. Prominent
aspects of the culture of Isaan include the indigenous form
of folk music, silk production, Muay Thai (Thai boxing), and
Isaan food, in which sticky rice and chilies are prominent.
The northeast region of Thailand has a fascinating culture
and is unique from other regions within Thailand. The visitor
to Isaan will discover the warm and friendly Isaan people,
a diverse cultural and historic heritage, and a part of Thailand
that is not yet discovered by most tourists.
