Even though 95% of Thais are Buddhist, almost every home has at least
one spirit house on its property for protection. This belief draws
more from the "animistic" roots of ancient Thailand, than
it does from it's "Buddhist" belief system. For us idol
worship is an ancient idea, but for Thais it is a present reality!
Every day Thais will bring fresh drinks, food, incense and flowers
to appease the spirits in those little houses. Normally Thais need
to invite a "spirit doctor" to carefully remove them, but with the
power of God through prayer we could do it ourselves. We carefully,
discretely (and with hesitant permission from the landlord) loaded
three spirit houses into the truck early in the morning, and threw
them to their death into a deep lake nearby.
