The vision for a Training Centre to equip and send missionaries
for Thailand and the surrounding countries started in the mid 1990’s.
YWAM Thailand’s leadership at that time chose Chiang Rai as
a strategic place to see that vision come about. We believe that
the work started then still holds the same potential to disciple
this and other nations.
Chiang
Rai is situated near the border to Myanmar and Laos and is surrounded
by tribal peoples. There are two universities in CR which draw future
leaders and people of influence. It is a fast growing area, and
the government sees it as an economic hub for trade with bordering
countries and with China. There is a lot of investment in infrastructure
and development.
The
first building has been used as a multifunctional building since
1999. Once the second building is completed, the first building
will serve as dormitory for staff and students, with a meeting room
on the third floor (already enclosed).
At this point YWAM Thailand has little specific training for missionaries
or potential missionaries. The center will provide a variety of
relevant courses which will equip missionaries with skills and understanding
to work among the unreached. To give purpose to the schools we will
develop new and appropriate ministries to reach target areas.
There
are already and number of local churches, ministries and missionaries
in the Chiang Rai area. We want to see the Training Center serving
this group through seminars and our training programs. YWAM itself
has several ministries operating in the area. The Training Center
will become a place of synergy between these various ministries.
We will also actively recruit and train staff for the existing YWAM
ministries in CR and other parts of Thailand and the region.
